Politically, 2022 proved to be relatively calm year, with only minor cabinet reshuffles. A parliamentary debate on a change in the voting system – from plurality voting to proportional representation – turned heated, however, and may have given a glimpse of tensions likely to come to the surface in next year’s presidential and parliamentary elections. Economic growth was just over 3%, but a key concern was the cost-of-living crisis and the very high inflation. The country received several targeted grants and concessional loans to strengthen the economy and deliver socioeconomic benefits for all, including the poor. In August, major protests broke out in Freetown and a number of provincial towns, triggered by the cost-of-living crisis. Dozens of people died, forcing President Julius Maada Bio to replace country’s highest-ranking military officials.
