The year was characterised by a deteriorating economy. Socioeconomic indicators did not improve over the previous year. The political scene, which started with violence against the opposition, gave way to revived SADC-mediated talks between the ruling party and the opposition. The talks gave birth to landmark amendments to the constitution and some draconian legislation.
