Abstract: Scholars of globalization generally agree that a process of social change is occurring with implications for social institutions, culture, and human interaction. They do not agree about what globalization means or the implications of such a process. Different theories or explanations attempt to make sense of worldwide changes. These include theories about the central role of the economy and capitalism. Other theories develop a globalization perspective around modernization. Still, another group of theories focuses on culture. This article offers an overview of the major theories about globalization with some discussion about the implications for understanding the role of religion. ⸙
