(254 words)

Spanish anatomist, mid-16th century. A pupil of Realdo Colombo, he appears to have lived for many years in Italy. He is especially known for his anatomical album adapted from Vesalius's Fabrica. Cf. H. Cushing, A biobibliography of Andreas Vesalius, 1962, pages 146-153; BB, V, pages 688-722 (under Vesalius). Plantin had the intention to bring on the market in 1576 a Spanish version of the treatise. The manuscript ready for printing, with a dedicatory to Jeronimo de Roda, and the approbatio of Silvester Pardo, 28 April 1576, is still preserved in Museum Plantin-Moretus (Ms. 35: cf. Denucé, Manuscrits, pages 19-20, no. 10). The troubles of the second half of the year, culminating in the sack of Antwerp, 4 November 1576, did shelve the project. Cf. F.A.A. Sondervorst, 'A propos de deux manuscrits espagnols conservés au Musée Plantin à Anvers' in Actas del XV Congreso international de Historia de la Medicina (Madrid-Alcala, 1956), I, Madrid, 1958, pages 361-369. Reproductions of the Valverda manuscript also in L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, II, plates 52 and 53. Cf. also for another aspect of the Vivae imagines: K. Rosenkranz, 'Die Initialen in Vesals Anatomie. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte des anatomischen Abbildung' in Sudhoffs Archiv für Geschichte der Medizin, 30, 1937, pages 35-46.
