Spanish historian. Mondragon (Guypuzcoa), 1525 - Valladolid, 1593. Librarian of Philip II for some years and historiographer of the King in 1563, he started working on his monumental History of Spain in 1556. To supervise its printing in the Officina Plantiniana, he came personally to Antwerp (1570-1571). On the historian's stay in Antwerp with details from Garibay's own account of the journey, see E. Gossart, 'Le chroniqueur Garibay chez Plantin' in Le Bibliophile belge, 11, 1876, pages 281-287 (data compiled by Gossart from the last volume of Garibay's collection of Spanish genealogies, Grandezas de Espana, published in 11 volumes by the Historical Academy of Spain in 1584). Cf. also Palau y Dulcet, 6, 1953, pages 123-124.
