SIMANCA, Jacobus

in The Plantin Press Online

(109 words)

Spanish bishop and theologian, 16th century. Born in Cordova. Taught canonic and civil law in Salamanca; became royal councillor in Valladolid, bishop of Badajoz and finally bishop of Zamora. Cf. Palau y Dulcet, 21, 1969, pages 266-268. It may be supposed that the publication of Simanca's works has been more or less forced upon Plantin by the Spanish authorities, more especially Arias Montanus (cf. e.g. nos. 2213-2215).
