Roman fabulist, c. 400 A.D. The chief source for his 42 fables is the Greek fabulist Gabrias. Plantin published two editions of Avianus's collected fables, but he had previously already printed a number of them in different editions of Aesop's fables (with the name of the Roman fabulist often misspellt as Anianus) (see nos. 11-18).
