French humanist, Le Puley, 1529 - Cluny, after 1570. Des Autelz, calling himself 'gentilhomme Charrolois' (= County of Charolais), friend of Ronsard, Du Bellay and other poets of the Pleiade, had already published some poetry, when in 1559 he paid a visit to the Netherlands. Early in April 1559 by the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis peace was (temporarily) restored between Valois and Habsburg. Article 18 granted Charolais to the King of Spain, who renounced his other claims to Burgundy. Des Autelz's aim in visiting the Low Countries was most certainly to get acquainted with the new master of Charolais and the nobles and magistrates of the country in order to gain some material profits from this courtship. The two poetry-albums Des Autelz has published by Plantin in 1559 are to be seen in this context. The young poet, however, was not rewarded for his literary activity and returned already at the end of 1559 to France, becoming in 1562 a judge in Cluny (Burgundy). Cf. M.L.M. Young, Guillaume Des Autelz. A study of his life and works, Travaux d'Humanisme et Renaissance, 48, 1961 (quoted Young).
