Prior of Crato and pretender to the throne of Portugal; 1531-1595. An illegitimate son of Duke Lewis of Béja, brother of King John III, he became prior of the Order of the Knights Hospitallers. At the death of King Sebastian (1578), he claimed the throne, but was pushed aside by his uncle, Cardinal Henrico. At the death of the latter (1580), King Philip II of Spain took Portugal by force of arms, and Antonio had to flee. In the following years, with the help of England and France, he tried several times but always unsuccessfully to reconquer the Portuguese throne. As a foe of King Philip II, he got also some support in the Netherlands.
