Benito Arias, who called himself in Latin Montanus and in Spanish Montano ('from the Mountains') after his birthplace Fregenal de la Sierra. Spanish theologian and intimate friend of Plantin. Fregenal de la Sierra, 1527 - Seville, 6 July 1598. He stayed at Antwerp from May 1568 till April 1572 to supervise the Polyglot Bible. After a trip to Italy (April-December 1572), he remained another two years in the city, leaving the Netherlands for good in May 1575. He returned to Spain by way of Italy and reached his homeland in May 1576. He remained in Spain for the rest of his life, first in or near the Royal Library of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, later at his estate at Pena de Aracena and in Seville.
