Ludolf the Carthusian or of Saxony. German spiritual writer, c. 1300 - 1378. First a Dominican, he joined the Carthusians at Strasbourg in 1340, becoming Prior of the Charterhouse at Coblence in 1343. In 1348 again an ordinary monk, he spent the rest of his life in Mainz and Strasbourg. His two principal works are a Commentary on the Psalms and the celebrated Vita Christi. The latter was first printed at Strasbourg in 1474, and frequently reprinted and translated.
