FRANCIS, Duke of Anjou and Alenҫon

Younger brother of King Henry III of France. He tried to act a political part in the Netherlands, taking the side of the rebels against Philip II. In 1582 he obtained formally the sovereignty of the Netherlands but already in 1583 he was obliged to leave the Low Countries.

II. Ordinances and Announcements (broadsides).

Broadsides of varying sizes; in Dutch (when not otherwise stated); set in gothic type (when not otherwise stated). Generally with a heading, surmounted by a woodcut with the coat-of-arms of the Duke (⊕ 160), or with the coat-of-arms of Brabant (⊕ 150). The name of the printer is not stated but type and initials point to Plantin.

IV. Joyous Entry in Antwerp.

At the end of 1580 Duke Francis obtained from the States-General the sovereignty of the Low Countries. In the beginning of 1582 he came to take possession of the provinces. On 10 February 1582 he landed at Flushing (Zeeland). On 19 February he arrived at Antwerp where he made his 'joyous entry' as Duke of Brabant. This entry has been commemorated in a number of publications.
