Italian jurist, especially known as the Father of Emblematic. Alzato (near Milan), 1 or 8 May 1492 - Pisa, 12 January 1550. The first illustrated edition of Alciatus's Emblemata was published by Steyner at Augsburg in 1531, and met a tremendous success. It was reprinted time and again, and inspired many other humanists to issue similar collections (see e.g. H. Junius and J. Sambucus). Cf. H. Green, Andrea Alciati and his Books of Emblems. A biographical and bibliographical study, London, 1872 (quoted Green); G. Duplessis, Les livres à gravures du XVIe siècle. Les Emblèmes d'Alciat. Paris, 1884 (quoted Duplessis); M. Praz, Studies in seventeenth-century imagery, 2nd edited by, Rome, 1964 (quoted Praz; however, lists, pages 248-252, only a few of the Alciatus editions); J. Landwehr, Emblem-Books in the Low Countries, 1554-1949, Utrecht, 1970 (quoted Landwehr); H. Homann, Studien zur Emblematik des 16. Jahrhunderts, Utrecht, 1971, pages 24-40 (no references to Plantin-editions). H. Green published also Andreae Alciati Emblematum Fontes Quatuor, Manchester-London, 1870 (facsimile reprint of the editions of Augsburg 1531, Paris 1534, and Venice 1546) and Andreae Alciati Emblematum Flumen abondans; or, Alciat's Emblems in their full stream, Manchester-London, 1871 (facsimile reprint of the edition of Lyons 1551).
