| Note 2 | The texts accompanying the 'old' maps are the same as in the 1583-French edition. They had been written by P. Heyns. Who made the texts for the new maps is not clear, but it was probably not Heyns (who in the meantime had left Antwerp and was residing at Haarlem). He had become openly Protestant: probably for this reason his name is not mentioned any longer on the title-page and in the introductory parts. |
| Note 3 | In the foreword by Galle, the engraver-publisher explains that he asked his good friend Ortelius for permission to publish this reduction of the Theatrum, 'remonstrant que cestuy cy ne porteroit aucun dommage à la distribution du sien, mais plustost le recommanderait' - and that he quickly received Ortelius's authorization. |
| Note 4 | Plantin charged Galle 70 florins Carolus guilders 17 stuivers for printing and paper (Arch. 20, folio 129: 'Philippus Galle pour compte du Miroir en françois imprimé anno 1588 doibt pour aultant que monte l'impression de 13 f⁰ [feuilles] du petit Miroir à 3 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers la somme de florins Carolus guilders 45 stuivers 10; Item pour 6½ rames du papier à 3 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers rame: florins Carolus guilders 25 stuivers 7') (text reproduced in Denucé, I, pages 249 and 251). This means that 250 copies must have been printed (13 sheets per copy: 6½ reams or 3,250 sheets of paper used) - which were bought by Plantin from Galle, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers a piece, for a total value of 400 florins Carolus guilders (100 copies entered on 31 August 1588, 150 copies to be delivered later: Arch. 20, folio 129). The total edition, however, must have been larger, as Galle sold to Plantin, from December 1588 onwards, quite a number of 'Epitome Theatri gallice' (at 1 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers a piece) (cf. Denucé, I, pages 251-252). |
| Note 5 | On 23 December 1588 Plantin informed the Lisbon bookseller Lopez Soarez d'Albergia that he would mail a copy of the French Epitome so that Soarez could see how the forthcoming Latin edition would look - more especially regarding the uniformity resulting from reducing the larger maps (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1422: 'De Epitome Theatri respondeo illustration D.T. si libellus excudatur in 16⁰ reservatis tabellis ea magnitudine qua nunc sunt nimium complicando, eadem tabula statim sacrarentur. Emisi epitomen gallicam forma quam fieri potuit minima, eandem prima oportunitate transmittam, ut illustration D.T. formam hanc videat, eadem fortassis latine brevi edituris sum'). |
