Variants | At least four variants may have circulated: A. As described (copy Vatican Apolstolic Library): probably a copy shipped to Italy before the final adaptations as given in the copies intended for Spain B. In the shipment of October 1572 to Spain a number of copies are described as having 'la croix de bois', meaning very likely the large woodcut representing Christ on the Cross as reproduced in no. 1676, perhaps with the accompanying Canon missae (also figuring in no. 1676) C. The shipment of October 1572 included a number of copies with 'la croix de cuivre', meaning to all probability the large copper engraving representing Christ on the Cross as reproduced in no. 1676, perhaps with the accompanying Canon missae D. Among the copies with 'la croix de cuivre' were some with the 'canon de cuivre', meaning perhaps the text of the Canon missae not reproduced typographically but in copper engraving. |
Illustrations | representing scenes from the New Testament and the Evangelists: I. Copper engraving: 1) Border, 310 × 197, in 2nd part, page 289, with scenes from the life of Jesus Christ; II. Woodcuts, some with the monograms of the designer Pieter van der Borcht (PB) and the woodcutters Arnold Nicolai (A), Cornelis Muller (C) and Antoon van Leest (AVL): 1) V. on title-page, 100 × 100 (St. Peter and St. Paul; PB and AVL) 2) 207 illustrations, 54 × 54 (the same blocks often repeated) 3) 1 illustration, 30 × 30, in 2nd part, page 44 4) 1 illustration, 28 × 28, in 4th part, page 1 |

Online bibliographical references | |
Note 1 | Third in folio missal of the Plantin Press, especially arranged for Spain (cf. 1st part, page [10]: 'Cuncta…iuxta modum et formam cantus Toletanae ecclesiae'), and with specific additions for Spain (at the end: 'Missae propriae sanctorum qui in Hispania specialiter celebrantur'). |
Note 2 | The printing started in the week 18-24 November 1571 (Rooses, M. Musée Plantin-Moretus, page 103), and was, according to the colophon, finished on 1 May 1572 (in fact 31 May or 1 June ? See immediately below). That is parts 1-5. Parts 6 and 7 ('Missae propriae sanctorum qui in Hispania specialiter celebrantur') were printed later. |
Note 3 | In his letter of 20 May-9 June 1572 to d'Albernoz Plantin affirms that he will finish within six days 700 missals (Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 186). On 9 June 1572 he could tell de Çayas that he has finished those 700 missals (Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 188). That is one month later than stated in the colophon - perhaps an error in the colophon, which should read in fact 31 May of 1 June. Two copies ('avec le chant de Toledo') were mailed to the secretary of Philip II on June 1572 (Ibidem, nos. 188 and 194). They were received by de Çayas shortly afterwards (as Plantin, in his letter of 16 July 1572 to de Çayas [Ibidem, no. 399], expresses his joy that the missals had arrived in good order). |
Note 4 | The reactions of the Spanish Court to the publication during its printing and afterwards are not known, but the many instructions sent to Plantin in those months and Plantin's answers must for a large part have been related to this edition (cf. Ibidem, nos. 193 [for 393], 406, 407,412). Plantin was instructed to add the 'Missae propriae sanctorum qui in Hispania specialiter celebrantur', the 'Modus cantandi orationes in missa, vesperibus et laudibus', and some other parts as well (probably printed May - August 1572: cf. Notes in preceding no.). On 4 November 1572 the typographer, in his letter to de Çayas, hopes that by this time the secretary should have received 'les offices des saincts peculiers en Hespagne pour les 4 Missels de long temps envoyés', which he had shipped on 20 August (Supplément Correspondance de C. Plantin, no. 95, and Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 424; cf. also Plantin's letter of 14 November 1572: Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 432, pages 221 and 224. In this letter of 14 November, page 228, the mailing of an additional copy of the missal to de Çayas is mentioned, while in Plantin's letter of 16 November 1572 [Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 435] he states to have included with his letter of 4 November an extra copy of the 'Missae propriae sanctorum…in Hispania'). Plantin had previously sent to de Çayas copies of 'Canonis terniones' (= Canon missae ?) to complement the copies already mailed to the secretary (cf. his letters to de Çayas, 4 November 1572 [Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 424, page 206] and to Vilalba, 5 November 1572 [Ibidem,no. 426, page 212])' |
Note 5 | The printing of the 700 copies was finished in May 1572, but, very likely owing to the negotiations with the Spanish Court about the additional parts, they were only shipped to Spain on 27 October 1572. In all 668 copies, subdivided: 384 'avec la croix de bois etc. cum Missis festorum en Hispa.', 178 'cum missis sanctorum hispan. etc. la croix de cuivre', 100 '[sur] grand papier de Lyon, canon de cuivre et la croix de cuivre', and finally 6 copies on vellum (Arch. 22, folios 9 verso-11 verso, 14 recto; values not noted). In Plantin's letter to de Çayas, 16 November 1572 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 435, pages 237-238) reference is made to this shipment, but in not very clear terms: 'Or quand nous fismes le compte des Missels et Bréviaires avec Monseigneur le docteur Ben. |
