Note 1 Second in folio missal of the Plantin Press, somewhat more richly illustrated (including a copper engraving) than the first edition.
Note 2 Of the first edition only 750 copies had been issued. As the sale was very promising, and as no particular remarks or corrections seem to have been made by the ecclesiastical authorities after the first edition came from his presses, Plantin started already in mid-August 1571 with this second edition (Rooses, Musée, page 103). According to the colophon the printing was finished on 24 March 1572.
Note 3 Of this second version a number of copies were also printed on vellum. One of them was sent to Gilbert d'Oignies, Bishop of Tournai. These copies cost 10 florins Carolus guilders more than the similar ones of the first edition (letter of Plantin, 25 March 1572 [Corr., II, no. 324]: 'et avec ce deux Missals en parchemin, desquels celuy du plus petit parchemin est de la première édition et vaudroit quarante florins; l'autre est de la dernière (qui n'a rien que des figures davantage) et cousteroit cinquante florins, le tout sans relier…').
Note 4 In his letter of 26 April 1572 to de Goneville, representative of Cardinal Granvelle, Plantin gives some details on the small changes brought in this second edition: 'J'ay depuis faict…une seconde impression desdicts Missals, en laquelle sont quasi toutes les figures propres selon quelque histoire de chaicun Evangile et les dimenches vacants d'après les Rois répétés au long après ceux de la Pentecouste, dont j'envoye icy le cahier du canon, auquel par le consentement de Sa Saincteté impétré par Sa Majesté, est adiouxté ce mot: Et rege nostro N. et une feille en laquelle j'ay, pour la commodité de ceux qui disent les messes sans chanter, imprimé les préfaces et communicantes sans notes et ung (à mon advis) beau crucifix de taille douce, afin d'en faire ce que bon vous semblera' (Ibidem, no. 328).
