Note 1 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 113, gives the following details about 'Ethica Corn. Valerii': the wages for composing and printing are entered on 23 November 1566, and amount to 7 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers; 'les affustages et copies (= that is the printed editions which were followed by the compositors)' cost 1 florins Carolus guilders 1 stuivers; 'Le privilege pour sa part' is noted down for 1 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers Together: 10 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers As each copy contains 6 sheets and as 900 copies were printed, 12 reams of paper 'à la coronne' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders per ream, came to 12 florins Carolus guilders, bringing the overall costs to 22 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers 'Qui est peu moins de ½ stuivers [per copy] '. |
Note 2 | The printing was thus in fact finished in November 1566, and the edition was, consequently, already on sale at the end of 1566. E.g. in a letter to de Çayas, 19 December 1566, Plantin notes the mailing of a copy of the Ethica (Corr., I, no. 21). |
