Note 1 | In 1568 Plantin published a large number of compendia or epitomes of Despauterius's treatises on Latin grammar (see: Despauterius, Hepburnius, Herlemannus). They included a series of four, listed in M 164, folio 8v, and M 296, folio 4v, as 'Despauterii [Grammatica], 8⁰: Prima pars, f[euilles] 10½ [= meaning thus 168 pages]; Syntaxis, f[euilles] 6½ [= meaning thus 104 pages]; Versificatoria, f[euilles] 3½ [= meaning thus 56 pages]; Regule Corderii, f[euilles] 3 [= meaning thus 48 pages]'. The price together was 2½ stuivers These are: a) Grammaticae institutionis libri VII (pars prima), arranged by Novimola; b) Syntaxis, arranged by Novimola; c) Ars versificatoria, arranged by J. Erverveldius (see there); d) Regulae speciales, arranged by M. Corderius (see there). The book-catalogue of the Fairs of Frankfurt for 1568 notes 'Ioan. Despauterii Grammatica, Syntaxis & Prosodia, in Compendium redacta, Antverpiae apud Plantinum, 1568, 8⁰' (cf. Nauwelaerts, 'Bijdrage tot de bibliographie van Simon Verepaeus' in De Gulden Passer, 25, 1947, page 73): this must refer to the same publications (Grammatica: Pars prima; Syntaxis; Prosodia: Ars versificatoria, together with the Regulae speciales). |
Note 2 | The 'Despauterii…Grammaticae institutionis libri VII' arranged by S. Novimola was first published in 1532 (J. Gymnicus, Cologne: BB, II, page 159). It met a certain success and was reprinted in 1534 (BB, II, page 160), 1551 (Ibidem, page 161), 1557 (Ibidem, page 162), 1560 (Ibidem, page 163), c. 1562 (Ibidem, page 164), 1565 (Ibidem, page 164), 1567 (Ibidem, page 165), and later, In 1570, 1571, 1575, 1577, 1578, 1585 (BB, II, pages 166-170). One of the publications must have served as model for Plantin's book. Very likely one of the editions printed by B. Gravius, Louvain, 1560 and 1565: they have the '…singularum dictionum Gallica et Teutonica interpretatio', which became in Plantin's publication the 'Index dictionum Gallice & Teutonice', and is not found in this form in the other editions of Novimola's arrangement. |
