| Note 2 | The Liturgia S. Petri is a combination of the Byzantine Mass (in Greek) with the ‘ordinarium’ of the Roman Mass translated into Greek. It is difficult to state if this Liturgia was only a literary exercise or really used for the celebration of the Mass, but it seems that it has in fact been used in the Byzantine world of Southern Italy and Sicily (cf. C. de Clercq, op. cit.). As explained in the note ‘Ad lectorem’, Wilhelmus Lindanus had some years before copied the Greek text from a manuscript in the library of Cardinal Sirlet in Rome. He edited it with a Latin translation, annotations and comments, adding the Sacrificii christiani actio atque ratio, a commentary on the Mass, compiled from the church-fathers by an anonymous theologian, from a manuscript in Lindanus’s own library. |
| Note 3 | Plantin’s edition was re-issued in Paris by Morel in 1595 and 1598 (cf. C. de Clercq, op. cit.). |
| Note 4 | It is probably to discuss the publication of this work that Wilhelmus Lindanus, Bishop of Roermond (1561-1588) and of Ghent (1588), paid a visit to Plantin in the later half of 1588 (cf. the letter of Plantin to Arias Montanus, 7 December 1588—7 January 1589: Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1420). The bishop died, however, on 2 November 1588. Joannes Livineius, the nephew of the bishop of Antwerp, Livinus Torrentius, had the manuscript revised and must have supervised the publication (cf. letter of L. Torrentius to A. Schottus, 30 January 1589: C. de Clercq, op. cit., page 182). |
