Online bibliographical references | |
Note 1 | Explanation of the 12 minor Prophets: each sentence or part of a sentence (printed in italic type) of the Bible-text is followed by a large comment (in roman type). Each chapter on a prophet is preceded by a praefatio and followed by a carmen ex voto. The carmen ex voto of the first prophet - Hossea - is preceded by a note by Plantin (Christophorus Plantinus pio lectori) (page 218). |
Note 2 | The author wrote his comments at various times. At the end of some of the chapters place and date are noted at which they were finished: Navis in agro Abulensi apud Divi Laurentii sacellum, August 1567 (Hossea); Madrid, 19 June 1567 (Abdia); Madrid, January 1568 (Sophonia); Madrid, October 1567 (Haggaeus); Antwerp, September 1568 (Zacharias); Antwerp, 3 January 1569 (Malachia). |
Note 3 | The colophon states that the work was finished in December 1570. It was in fact somewhat earlier on the market as Plantin could already on 19 October 1570 ship 6 copies - two of them on 'grand papier' - to Cardinal Granvelle (Correspondance de C. Plantin, II, no. 301). |
Note 4 | Arias Montanus took 400 copies of his work and paid them, at 28½ stuivers a piece, 570 florins Carolus guilders (entered in the ledger on 8 January 1571: Arch. 16, opening 108 left). |
Note 5 | Some of Arias's works came under attack in Spain. Plantin, at the end of June 1572 (between 27 June and 8 July), could write to his friend - then in Italy - that he had received a message from Mathias Gast, bookseller at Salamanca, telling that the Commentaria were cleared and the sale permitted (Correspondance de C. Plantin, III, no. 395: 'A Dno Matthia Gast Bibliopola Salmanticensi litteras accepi quibus significat opus tuum in prophetas minores diligenter rursus et severe satis fuisse illic examinatum atque tandem Bibliopolis redditum cum libera potestate illud distrahendi'). |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 11 verso (Comm. in XII proph[etas] minores a⁰ -, f[euilles] 251, [price:] stuivers 70). |
