Note 1 | Of the edition two versions were issued: one with copper engraving-illustrations (no copy known), and one with woodcut-illustrations. |
Note 2 | Plantin told Buyssetius on 15 June 1577 that he was preparing an in 16mo breviary in two volumes. Before starting he liked to receive the corrections promised by his correspondent (Corr., V, no. 765). More than a year later, however, he had to tell de Cayas that the edition was not yet finished, but he hoped to have it completed within a month (letter of September 1578 [Corr., VI, no. 809]: 'Breviarium in 16. majusculis typis eleganter a me inchoatum ante quindecim menses (tam lente facultatibus destitutus nunc incedunt nostra praela) quod speraveram mense Augusto absolvendum necdum absolutum reperi neque toto trimestri absolvendum erat a nostris nisi adpulissem. Nunc autem spero me infra unicum mensem me absoluturum…'. Cf. Corr., V, no. 797). At the end of the year Plantin could send a copy to the secretary of Philip II (Corr., VI, no. 817). Other 'patroni' were not forgotten (cf. letters to Buyssetius, 14 March 1579 and 28 August 1579: Corr., VI, nos. 825 and 837). |
Note 3 | The edition seems to have been already completely sold out in June 1580 (letter to Buyssetius: Corr., VI, no. 881). |
