Note 1 Series of 65 illustrations with accompanying moralizing Latin poems. Each section includes two pages, starting on the even ones. The illustrations are on the uneven pages, with above a motto and underneath a brief description (e.g. illustration no. 1: above 'Superborum ruina', underneath 'Sol. Luna'; no. 54: 'Scelesti hominis imago, et exitus', 'Lupus. Asinus'); they are explained on the even pages by a 'general' poem (in roman type) and a 'morale' (in italic type).
Note 2 The plates are without name of engraver. In the older reference-works they are ascribed to the publisher (and engraver) Gerard de Jode. They, are, however, stylistically very similar to the illustrations made by Marcus Gheeraerts for Edward de Dene, De warachtige fabulen der dieren, Bruges, 1567 (see also no. cp010345), and are now, consequently, attributed to the Bruges master (cf. A.J.J. Delen, Histoire de la gravure dans les anciens Pays-Bas. Le XVIe siècle. Les graveurs-illustrateurs, 1934, page 141; Hollstein, 7, page 100; Landwehr, no. 441).
Note 3 The edition is not listed in the Plantinian catalogues (M 296 and M 321). It was in fact published by Gerard de Jode, who provided not only the illustrations but had them also printed in his studio. Plantin's part was limited to supplying the paper and printing the typographical texts for G. de Jode. He received for this commission 35 florins Carolus guilders, paid in three installments (Arch. 62, folio 11r: 26 January 1584, 12 florins Carolus guilders; folio 14v: 2 February, 15 florins Carolus guilders; folio 17v: 10 February, 8 florins Carolus guilders Cf. J. Denucé, Oud-Nederlandsche kaartmakers in betrekking met Plantijn, I, 1912, page 165).
Note 4 A copy of '1 Apologi creaturarum, 4⁰', valued at 1 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers, was among the illustrated works shipped by Plantin to Arias Montanus in January 1585 (A.J.J. Delen, 'Plantin als prentenhandelaar' in De Gulden Passer, 10, 1932, page 21).
Note 5 Of the work two variants are known: one as described here, one with minor changes, including another engraved title-page (see following no.).
