Note 1 | First catalogue of forbidden books printed by Plantin. As stated on the title-page and in the privilege, this Index was compiled at the order of the Duke of Alva, Governor-General of the Netherlands. It is divided into three parts: a) List of authors of whom all works are prohibited (pages [3-39]), b) 'Certorum auctorum libri prohibiti': authors of whom certain works (or parts of works) are prohibited (pages [39-52]), c) 'Libri prohibiti ab incerti nominis auctoribus compositi': list of forbidden books by anonymous authors (pages [52-80]). |
Note 2 | This Index is not identical to the Trentine Index of 1564, and is not reprinted as such in the Index librorum prohibitorum printed by Plantin in 1570. It had been compiled - in a hurry, at the pressing demand of the ever impatient Duke of Alva - by Arias Montanus (see Index of 1570, no. 1444). |
Note 3 | This Index was also reproduced in the form of a poster (in all probability to be hung in the bookshops) (see no. cp012583). |
