| Note 5 | In the 'Quid in hac Bibliorum editione sit praestitum' is promised to publish within due time as an appendix to Plantin's new Bible-editions a list of Variae lectiones, which were too long to be given as marginals and which could not be easily printed in this Bible-edition. In fact only the Variae lectiones Novi Testamenti (by Franciscus Lucas) were nearly finished at the time - and when submitted to Rome were opposed by Cardinals Sirlet and Caraffa (cf. the letter of Plantin to Cardinal Sirlet, 9 April 1575 [Corr., IV, no. 615, page 259], in which the archtypographer asks that the objections of the cardinals concerning the variae lectiones ad finem Novi Testamenti should be communicated, so that the Louvain theologians could take the advice into consideration when working on the Notationes Veteris Testamenti. Cf. also the letter of F. Lucas to Balthasar Ansidei, librarian of the Vatican, 23 November 1576: Suppl. Corr., no. 134). The resistance of Rome was finally overcome: in 1580 Plantin printed as a separate edition Lucas's Notationes in Sacra Biblia, with a warm dedicatory to Cardinal Sirlet (see no. cp013413). But these Notationes were too large to be inserted in the Bible-editions themselves. They appear only in the monumental Bible-edition in folio of 1583 (see no. cp012970), whilst an abridged version of the Lectiones Novi Testamenti was printed in the 1584-edition of the New Testament (see no. cp011562). |
| Note 6 | At the end of 1574 Plantin mailed a large number of copies of his 1574-Bible editions to high church dignitaries in Rome, including Pope Gregorius XIII. The printer had, in fact, run into a new difficulty. When preparing a new publication of the revised Louvain-text (intended to be a 'big' de luxe edition, at the request of Spanish magnates) he received a copy of the Bible published in 1571 at Venice by the Junta-firm, with on page 4 a letter of Thomas Manriquez, 'Sacri Palatii Magister', in which the prelate asks the Venetian typographer to print Plantin's 1569-edition, but with some parts deleted. As these parts are not enumerated in the letter, Plantin demands Manriquez to specify which parts - important text-elements and marginals or the less important summaries at the beginning of each chapter and index - were aimed at, his own collation of his 1569-edition with the Venice-copy having given no result (letter of about 9 October 1574: Corr., IV, no. 564). At the same time Plantin started mailing Bibles and letters to other church dignitaries in Rome, with the same inquiry (to Alanus Copus: 9 October 1574 and 20 October 1574 [Corr., IV, nos. 565 and 571]; to Pope Gregorius XIII, 9 October 1574 [Ibidem, no. 566]; to Cardinal Caraffa, 1574 [Ibid., no. 567]). The answer of Rome is not known - if (here has been one. In any case, the 'big' de luxe edition was not continued and Plantin's next Bible-edition was only published in 1580, when the influence of Rome in the rebellious Netherlands was all but nonexistent. |
