Note 1 Collection of 52 biographies of saints, compiled and summarized from the De probatis sanctorum historiis of the German Carthusian Laurentius Surius (1522-1578), published in 6 volumes in Cologne in 1570-75; itself an adaptation of the Sanctorum priscorum patrum vitae of the Italian hagiographer, Aloysius Lipomanus (published in Venice in 8 volumes, 1551-60, and in Louvain in 2 volumes, 1564). Cf. the enumeration of the saints treated, in E. Cockx-Indestege and G. Glorieux, Belgica typographica, I, Bibliotheca Regia Bruxellensis, no. 1381. On Surius and his work: P. Note 2 In a letter of 5 January 1588, answering an epistle of Haraeus of 30 December [1587], Plantin explained to the author that he was willing to publish the work, that he had sent it to Brussels to obtain the privilege, which he had received some days ago (the privilege is dated 7 December 1587), and that he is now waiting for a press to be free to start printing (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1340).
Note 3 Reprinted by Jan Moretus in 1590 and 1594 (copies in Museum Plantin-Moretus and KBR Royal Library of Belgium).
