Note 1 | This edition included very likely copies with different title-pages: some with Plantin's imprint; others (in five versions) with the address of the Lisbon bookseller Joannes ab Hispania (de Molina) (see following nos.). |
Note 2 | The edition was in fact composed and printed by Hendrik Aelsens (or Alsens), Plantin's former pressman, who in 1568 and following years often worked for his former master. On 15 October 1568 he was paid 7 florins Carolus guilders 'à bon compte de horae 24º', and on 5 October (probably an error for 25 October) again 12 florins Carolus guilders On 10 November finally 13 florins Carolus guilders 'compté pour la recomposition et presse, estendre laissive etc. des petittes heures in 24 imprimées en sa maison à 25500 [very likely an error for 2,500], sans l'impression [= meaning here to all probability the paper used], correction, et usage de la lectre qui est mise à part'. In all, consequently, 32 florins Carolus guilders were paid to Aelsens (Arch. 31, folio 35 recto). |
Note 3 | Bowen suggests A-Z8, a8 (or *8, A-Z8) as a possible collation (Bowen, Book of Hours, 226) |
Note 4 | According to Bowen, Voets identification of Arch. 1230, folios 319 recto-322 verso as being part of this Horae is incorrect (see cp013150 for Bowens new suggested identification of these sheets). (Bowen, Book of Hours, 226) |
Note 5 | According to Bowen, the setting and printing of this Horae was completed by the first week of May 1568. For payments for the setting she refers to Arch. 31, folio 58 verso. For payments for the printing she refers to Arch. 31, folio 49 verso. Bowens suggested collation is derived from the reference in Arch. 31, folio 58 verso, to Laurent Verschande being paid on 1 May 1568 for work on the 8 sheets that constituted the entire Horae in 24°. Furthermore, Bowen suggests that since there are typically 3 quires per sheet in a 24°, this would suggest that the 24° Horae contained 24 quires, which would result in either of the common signatures suggested by Bowen.
