Note 1 | Latin translation of the French edition. As specified on the title-page the work was translated from French into Latin by the author himself. In the note 'L'imprimeur au lecteur' in the French editions of 1581 and 1582 Plantin had already announced this forthcoming Latin edition: 'Amy Lecteur, l'Autheur a escript ce Livre premierement en François, parce qu'il est en premier lieu debteur à sa Patrie. Mais il a deliberé de le traduire luymesmes en Latin, au plustost qu'il pourra; et desia y a mis la main. Ainsi tu pourras en attendant user de cestuy-cy; et, aydant Dieu, nous te ferons voir la traduction en bref'. |
Note 2 | In a letter to J. Moretus, 4 December 1583, Gilles Beys certifies that, among other works, he received '6 Plessis de religione lat. 8⁰' more than noted on his bill ('ceulx la sont oultre et davantage que la facture') (Corr., VII, no. 1013). |
Note 3 | Of 'Plesseius 8⁰' (very likely this Latin edition, and not the French version) 1, 250 copies were printed (Arch. 788). |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 4v (De veritate Religionis adversus Atheos, 8⁰, Phil. Mornei, 8⁰, f[euilles] 51½, [price:] stuivers 13), M 164, folio 9r, and M 321. |
