| Note 1 | Latin translation of the treatise De virginitate by Julius Pogianus (Italian humanist; Suna, 1522 - Milan, 5 November 1568). In the dedicatory Pogianus explains how Marcellus II (M. Cervini; pope from 9 April till 1 May 1555), when he heard from Gulielmus Sirletus that Joannes Chrysostomus had written a treatise on virginity of great scriptural importance ('…quo libro Chrys[ostomus] ipse in ilia nobili explanatione Pauli epistolae ad Corint. eum locum, quantum in se fuit, perpurgatum testaretur, egit cum homine…'), tried to get a copy. Sirletus obliged. Marcellus II found the text so interesting that he charged Pogianus to translate it. Pogianus had some doubts about his own abilities as translator, but was persuaded by Cardinal Reginalds Pole to do the job. Cardinal Pole died (November 1558), but Pogianus continued. |

| Note 4 | Half of the edition was taken by Plantin's Antwerp colleague, Antonius Tilens, as noted in the cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 74, which gives the following details about 'Chrisost. De virginit.': the wages for composing and printing are entered from 4 until 24 March 1565 and amount to 14 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers For the edition a 'papier carré petit' was used, supplied by Tilens. Plantin printed 1,250 copies 'dont ie luy en ay livré la moictié ayant équipolé la faceon contre le papier de ma part qui est 625 (= corrected into 606) exemplaires qui p[ar] ce moyens coustent en tout 14 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers et les copies [= of the edition from which Plantin's publication was reprinted] et Privilege'. |
| Note 5 | It may be surmised that Tilens took the initiative (the privilege is to his name) and it is not excluded that his copies received a title-page showing his imprint. |
