Note 3 | The execution of the illustrations was entrusted to two Parisian craftsmen: the designer Geoffroy Ballain and the woodcutter Jean de Gourmont. In Arch. 3, folio 27r, Plantin noted (in April 1565 ?) that, through his 'brother' (Pierre Porret), he had paid in Paris to Geoffroy Ballain for 'figures de Reynard de Vos 72' 30 florins Carolus guilders He continued: those 72 'figures' will cost for cutting 54 florins Carolus guilders 'Et ce de marché faict quant à la taille à Jehan de Gourmont dont y en a 6 de taillés et payés qui font 4 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers'. The same indications are retaken in the cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 81: in April 1565 for 72 'figures' to Geoffroy Ballain 30 florins Carolus guilders, for 6 'figures' cut to Jehan de Gourmont 4 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers (In Arch. 36, page 99: on 6 September 1565 Plantin, when noting down the bills sent by Pierre Porret from Paris, had to correct slightly the amount: 'Il a payé à Gourmont pour 6 planches de Renart: 5 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers'). Finally, in the inventory of his wood-blocks, dated 12 July 1566, Plantin listed: '41. De Regnard de Vos, à 20 stuivers: 41 florins Carolus guilders' (Arch. 36, page 58). This means, consequently, that of the 72 designs made by G. Ballain, 41 have been cut but only 25 used, while of the blocks which J. de Gourmont had to cut only 6 are accounted for. It may be assumed that de Gourmont executed the other blocks as well. The reason why of the 72 designs only 41 have been cut and 25 used is not disclosed in the Plantinian archives. However, after 1565 all traces are lost of de Gourmont: he very likely died that year. It may be supposed that at the time of his death he had already delivered 25 blocks, and was working on the remaining 47 blocks - of which only 16 could be recovered. This can also explain why of the blocks supplied only 6 were actually paid. |
Note 4 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 81, gives the folowing details about 'Regnard de Vos': after the note of April 1565 concerning the illustrations and mentioned above, is listed at the date of 22 June 1566 the wages for composing and printing the 10 sheets, amounting to 26 florins Carolus guilders As each copy contains 10 sheets and as 1,600 copies were printed, 33 reams of paper 'gros bon' were used which came to 32 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers The 'format' was entered for 14 stuivers, bringing the overall expenses to 93 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers (59 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers for paper, printing and format; 34 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers for the illustrations); 'Qui est la pièce sans les figures qui est peu moins de ¾ [stuivers]'. |
Note 5 | The compositor Claes Amen was paid for the first sheet on 25 May 1566 and for the last on 29 June 1566 (L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, II, page 305). The first copy was actually sold on 26 June 1566. The sale of 652 copies has been traced in 1566, 1567 and 1568 by L. Voet, The Golden Compasses, II, pages 519-521 (cf. also page 441, n. 1). |
