Note 1 | The ‘moral precepts’ for the youth form the gist of the work (pages 17-30), followed by ‘In Natalem Redemptoris humanae conditionis Iesu Christi oratio’ (pages 31-39; reprinted the same year by Plantin in a separate publication: see following no.), and four other poems (In monstrosam effigiem carmen ad lectorem candidum: pages 41-42; De Gallis jocus: pages 43-46; De quodam qui puellae prius a se, quod pudicitiam prostituere nollet, interfectae, stuprum obtulit: pages 46-48; De latrocinio Traiecti ad Mosam ipsa nocte Nativitatis Dominicae in sacra D. Servatii aede perpetrato, An. 1575: pages 48-50). They are preceded by a series of poems by Libertus or in his honour (Eidem colendissimo suo maecenati [= Gulielmus Dupais, to whom the dedicatory is addressed] F. Libertus Houthem: pages 9-10; M. Arnoldi Molani a Loemel ad Bruxellenses Prosopoeia: page 11; M. Gerardi Aemilii, in F. Liberti Houthemii ethica: page 12 [in Greek]; Eiusdem epigramma: page 13; In Momum Aemilius, sub authoris persona: page 13; Eiusdem epigramma: page 14; Epigramma D. et M. Sebastiani Paunelli Aquensis, ad Libertum Houthenium: pages 14-16). They are followed by another series of poems by students of Houthem and in his honour (pages 50-53: by Aegidius Holy, Matthias Eustathius, Nicolaus Hervianus, Thomas Massotte, Gulielmus Taye, Alexander Chassey, Joannes Banelt, Martinus Banelt). The poems of Libertus are analyzed by L. Roersch in Biographie Nationale [de Belgique], 9, Columns 549-551. |
Note 2 | In 1573 had appeared at Liège, ex officina Gualteri Morberii, a first edition (cf. BB, III, pages 521-522). The Plantin-publication is a reprint with a number of rather important changes: the dedicatory is now addressed to G. Dupais (instead of to two aldermen of Liège, Joannes Streel and Petrus Bex) and dated Brussels, 18 September 1577, but its content remains largely the same; some poems are omitted; others have been added (the poems on pages 9-16 and pages 41-50; the four epigrams by G. Taye, A. Chassey, J. Banelt, M. Banelt: pages 51-53); the introductory verses to the In Natalem Redemptoris oratio are lacking. |
Note 3 | Listed in M 296, folio 5v (Ethica vitae ratio Jo. Liberti Houthem, 8, 77, f[euilles] 3½, [price:] stuivers 1), and M 164, folio 10v. |
