Note 1 | The illustrations are a selection from the 100 woodcuts used by Plantin in his edition of Faernus, Centum Fabulae, 1566 (cf. nos. 1162-1163). |
Note 2 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 103 verso, gives following details about the 'Fabellae aliquot Aesopicae in gratiam puerorum': 1,250 copies were printed; the wages for composing and printing amount to 5 florins Carolus guilders; 4 reams 10 'mains' of 'papier g[rand?] carré', were used, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers per ream, worth 7 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers Total costs: 12 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers This made the cost-price per copy 'moins de ¼ stuivers'. The dates of printing are not given, but it is specified 'mis à compte [noted down in the accounts] le 9 Septembre [1566]'. |
Note 3 | Probably to be identified with the not-dated edition listed in M 296, folio 6 verso (Fabellae Aesopicȩ selectȩ cum fig[uris] 16⁰, [feuilles] 2¼, [price:] stuivers ½), andM 164, folio 13 verso. The note can eventually refer to a similar edition of selected fables by Aesop for use in the schools, published by Plantin in 1586 (see cp011884); this edition, however, contains not 2¼ (or 2½) but 3 sheets. |
