Note 1The seven Libri adversus gentes (also quoted adversus nationes) are a detailed attack upon ancient paganism.
Note 2The work of Arnobius was for the first time edited by Faustus Sabaeus and printed in Rome, Franciscus Priscianensis, 1542. In his Lectori S. the editor of the Plantinian publication, Theodorus Canterus, explains that he followed this edition (in fact his explanation is somewhat ambiguous: 'Itaque partim fide Romani codicis, qui mihi adinstar manuscripti fuit, ita praeclara veteris scripturae vestigia continebat', but can only refer to the Roman printed edition), consulted Clemens Alexandrinus ('…partim etiam Clementis Alexandrini auxilio [a quo multa auctor noster ad verbum poene mutuatus est, ut suis locis indicabitur…']), and made use of the lectiones of Gelenius.
Note 3The Spanish humanist Petrus Ciaconius (Chacon), living in Italy, seems also to have approached Plantin for an edition of Arnobius (letter of Plantin to Arias Montanus, 28 April 1576 [Correspondance de C. Plantin, V, no. 718]: 'Arnobium a Dno Ciaconio et quicquid ab eo profectum ad manus nostras pervenerit amplexabimur et in reipub. utilitatem publicum faciemus…'), but must have failed to send his copy.
Note 4Listed in M 164, folio 1 verso (Arnobii contra gentes disputatio T. Canteri, 8⁰, a⁰ 82, [price:] stuivers 5, f[euilles] 18), M 296, folio 1 recto, and M 321 (under 1582).
