| Note 3 | In the privilege to the author, dated 28 January 1582, Le Jeune is described as 'maistre de la musicque de nostre très chier et très aimé frère le Duc d'Aniou (= Duke Francis of Anjou and Alençon)'. He probably accompanied in this function Duke Francis to the Netherlands, where he got into contact with Plantin and could convince the printer to publish his Livre de mélanges. Plantin's privilege granted by King Henry III is dated 5 August 1582. The subsequent political troubles which finally led to Duke Francis's precipitate departure from the Netherlands, can explain why Plantin did not issue immediately the work of the Duke's musician. The reasons, however, why he finally put it onto the market in 1585 are not clear. In any case this music-publication, with its oblong format and its scores according to voices, if typical for the production of the Antwerp firms specialized in music-printing as those of Susato and Phalesius, is unique for the Plantin Press. |
