Canterus and passed to Giselinus; the others collected by Giselinus himself); o) pages 321-354: Adagia aliquot Melchioris Neipei Bredenani nunquam adhuc edita (preceded, pages 321-322, by a dedicatory letter of M. Neipius to V. Giselinus, Bredene, 14 September 1565; 65 adagia collected by Neipius and passed to Giselinus). |
Note 2 | This edition may be considered to form in fact an additional volume to Erasmus, Adagiorum epitome, Plantin, 1564 (with which it is indeed most frequently bound) (cf. cp011348 In the foreword Giselinus explains how, Plantin having just finished Erasmus’s Epitome, he asked the printer why he did not have added the abridged adagia-series of Junius and Brassicanus. Plantin answered that he had thought about it but had not been able to do it yet, but that he could always publish a second collection, if Giselinus was willing to do the job. Which the humanist-physician finally did. |
Note 3 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 96 verso, gives the following details about ‘Epitome Adagiorum tomus 2us’. The wages for composing and printing, amounting to 64 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers, are entered from 7 August 1565 till 1 May 1566 — but with a rather large interval. On 7 August 1565 the quires A-H were paid to the workers, but only on 10 November 1565 and at a rather slow pace the work resumed (10 November — 8 December 1565: quires K-L; 15 December 1565 — 12 January 1566: quires M — N — A; 16 February — 2 March 1566: quires O — S; 9-17 March 1566: quires T — Z; 1 May 1566: quires a — d). As each copy contains 28 sheets and as 1,500 copies were printed, 85 reams 10 ‘mains’ of paper were used, which came to 119 florins Carolus guilders 14 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 184 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers On the opposite page is, however, noted: ‘Led[ict] Epitome Adag. tomus alter couste 188 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers, qui est la pièce 2½ stuivers..’.which probably means that there were not specified additional expenses amounting to florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers |
Note 4 | Plantin, in fact, paid even more: the fee of Giselinus has not been included in his cost-accounting note. It amounted to 12 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers (Arch. 3, folio 52 recto, at the date of 15 June 1566: ‘Adagiorum tomus alter 12 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers que i’ay payé à diverses fois à Me Victor Ghiselin pour un recoignoissance de son labeur) (cf. Arch. 31, folio 72 recto: on 1 and 2 January 1565 [= for 1566] 7 florins Carolus guilders and 1 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers to Giselinus ‘pro Adagiis’). |
Note 5 | The privilege is dated 7 April 1566 old style = 7 April 1567. As, however, the printing was finished in May 1566, this must be an error (very likely for 7 April 1565 old style). |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 1 recto (Adagiorum Iunii et Erasmi epitome, f[euilles] 28, [price:] stuivers 5), and M 164, folio 1 recto. |
