Online bibliographical references | |
Note 1 | The most famous work of Canisius, being the Catholic counterpart of Luther's Catechismus. |
Note 2 | The first edition was published (without the name of the author) at Vienna, 1555. It immediately became a best-seller and was often reprinted (e.g. Louvain: 1556, 1558, 1560, 1561; Antwerp: 1558, 1560, 1561, 1562, 1565). |
Note 3 | All these editions were published without the consent of the author. Finally, he took the matter into his own hands, made some changes and additions, and added a foreword to the Senate and People of Cologne, dated 6 January 1566: this edition was first published at Cologne, by Maternus Cholinus in 1566 (De Backer-Sommervogel, II, Column 623; Cholinus had already previously published the Summa: in 1560 and 1563). That same year Plantin printed this renewed version. Part of the publication received a title-page naming Maternus Cholinus as co-publisher (see the description in following no.; 600 of these copies were shipped to the Cologne publisher). It is not quite clear what happened: if Plantin approached Cholinus for an Antwerp re-edition, which resulted ultimately in this co-publication, or if Cholinus, his Cologne-edition selling out quickly, asked Plantin for a reprint, of which Plantin took advantage in publishing part of the edition under his own name. |
Note 4 | Plantin's dedicatory to Philip II is in a very general tone and contains no details about the genesis of the work. A reference to this dedicatory is made in Plantin's letter to de Cayas, 1 October 1567 (Corr., I, no. 84, pages 186-187). |
Note 5 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 107, gives following details about 'Summa doctrinae Christianae Canisii': the wages for composing and printing were paid from 8 June until 3 August 1566. Together with 'la faceon de la table' (1 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers), they came to 34 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers For the 1,550 copies printed 34 reams of paper 'grand carré' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 12 stuivers per ream, costed 54 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 88 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers 'qui est la pièce environ 1¼ patt. [stuivers]'. |
Note 6 | Plantin shipped on 6 August 1566 to Maternus Cholinus at Cologne 600 copies of the 'Summa doctrinae christianae' 'lesquels j'ay imprimé pour luy' - very likely thus those copies bearing Cholinus's name on the title-page. They were entered, at 1½ stuivers a piece, to a total value of 46 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers (including 1 florins Carolus guilders 4 stuivers for extra-expenses) (Arch. 44, folio 104v). |
Note 7 | Mention of the works is made by Plantin in a Spanish letter to de Cayas, 19 December 1566 (Corr., I, no. 21, page 53). |
Note 8 | Not listed in M 296. |
