Note 1 | Codification of the law of the County of Artois: the general customary law (Coutumes generales) of Artois and its dependencies (Bethune, Lens, St. Omer, St. Pol), the procedure to be used in the Council of Artois ('ordonnances, stils et usaiges de la Chambre du Conseil provincial d'Artois'), a series of decrees of Charles V on particular points of criminal and civil law. |
Note 2 | The name of Plantin is not quoted in the work, but in M 164, folio 7 verso, and M 296, folio 4 recto, it is stated that the edition was printed by Plantin for J. Bourgeois: 'Coustumes d'Artois pour Jehan Bourgeois d'Aras, 16⁰, f[euilles] -, [price:] stuivers 4'. Cf. also Arch. 44, folio 28 verso, and Arch. 40, opening 30 left (see below). |
Note 3 | Moreover, the cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 95 verso, gives following details about 'Coustumes d'Artois 16⁰': the wages for composing and printing are entered from 12 January till 9 March 1566 and amount to 24 florins Carolus guilders 15 stuivers As each copy contains 11 sheets and as 1,250 copies were printed, 28 reams of paper were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers per ream, came to 36 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 61 florins Carolus guilders 3 stuivers 'Mis à compte b - : 96 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers à 3 florins Carolus guilders 10 stuivers la rame'. 44, folio 28 verso; retaken in Arch. 40, opening 30 left). |
