| Note 1 | Text of the ten tragedies of Seneca, edited by Martinus Antonius Delrio (cf. page 783) with accompanying notes (on each page: some lines of the text, surrounded at one side and underneath by the comments and annotations). Technically a text-edition, the publication is in fact more a study on Seneca's work (as rightly stressed on the title-page): the accent lays on the annotations, while the text is only given to make the explanations more clear. Cf. also A. Dreano, 'Un commentaire des tragédies de Sénèque au XVIe siècle par Martin-Antoine del Rio' in Les tragédies de Sénèque et la théâtre de la Renaissance, Paris, 1964, pages 203-209. |
| Note 2 | The foreword to the reader (pages [15-16]) is dated 10 August 1571. The note at the end of the work also stresses the fact that Delrio finished his Adversaria in 1571 at the precocious age of 19, but adds that since then he had made a few additions. |
| Note 3 | Delrio contacted Plantin in the fall of 1575. In a letter to the author, 7 November 1575 (Corr., V, no. 669), the typographer explains that, having received Delrio's letter, dated Bruges, 12 September 1575, he had immediately taken care to have the [manuscript of the] Adversaria brought from Bruges. After some news referring to Justus Lipsius, he continues on the subject of the Adversaria: he had received to-day the [manuscript of the] Adversaria and will, according to the wish of Delrio's father (the rich and powerful Anton Delrio, who was residing in Antwerp, and must have directly contacted Plantin), print it in 4⁰, together with the text ('Adversaria hodie accepi eaque ex Patris tui sententia in quarta quod aiunt forma una cum Senecae textu imprimam quam primum potero, nec in syllaba prudenter vel scienter a tuo et Fabricii exemplari discedemus'). From this passage it should be deduced that Plantin himself provided the text of the works of Seneca, following the 'Fabricii exemplar', that is L. Annaei Senecae tragoediae editae emendatiores, edited by Georgius Fabricius and published in Leipzig, Ern. Vaegelinus, 1566. |
| Note 4 | In a letter to Joachim Camerarius, 13 January 1576, Plantin notes incidentally that he has the work on his presses (Corr., V, no. 695: in the draft of the letter: 'Tragedias Senecae cum commentariis Antonii Martini del Rio imprimo'; Suppl. Corr., no. 121: in the original of the letter: 'Tragaedias Senecae cum commentariis Antonii Martini Rii subposui etiam praelo…'). In November 1576 a copy was forwarded to Camerarius (Corr., VI, no. 744). |
