Note 1Exercise in Latin grammar by prince Philip (the later Philip III), at that time 11 years old, held publicly in the royal palace in the Royal Library of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 23 August 1588; explained and compiled by one of the preceptors of the young prince: Exercitatio grammatica Philippi principis (pages 7-13; detailing the setting and the meaning of the meeting at which prince Philip showed his aptitude for the Latin language); Assertiones grammaticae (page 14; the grammatical theses defended by prince Philip); Description of the actual scene (pages 15-18); Oratio Philippi principis (pages 19-20; text of the exposition of the prince, followed by its laudatory appreciation); Series of orationes held by preceptors and professors of the prince after the exposition of their pupil, with a few words of comment by Garsia (Oratio marchionis Lanzi: pages 21-25; oratio Petri Bovadillae: pages 25-27; oratio comitis Uzedae: pages 27-29; oratio marchionis Milliteli: pages 30-31; oratio comitis Lermae: pages 31-32; oratio marchionis Sfortiae: pages 33-34; oratio Didaci Brachamontii: pages 35-36; oratio Petri Gusmanii: pages 36-39).
Note 2The work was published in the same year 1588 in Alcala by Joannes Iniguez a Lequerica (cf. Palau y Dulcet, loc. cit.). It is not clear if Plantin copied this edition or printed his text from a manuscript copy forwarded by a Spanish personality. Anyway it may be assumed that the typographer was ordered by some authority (or received a 'suggestion') to print it.
Note 3A similar compilation of a grammatical exercise in public by prince Philip (Exercitatio altera grammatica Philippi Hispaniarum principis) by Garsia was published by the Officina Plantiniana in 1590 (a copy in Museum Plantin-Moretus and KBR Royal Library of Belgium; listed in M 296, folio 3r, under 1589).
Note 4Listed in M 296, folio 3r (Concertatio Philippi III, 8º, 88, f[euilles] 3, [price:] stuivers 1½; Concertatio 2da, f[euilles] 3½, [price:] 2, aº 1589), and M 321 (under 1588 and 1590).
Note 5A copy was mailed to P. Pantinus on 1-7 December 1588 (Corr., VIII-IX, no. 1418: 'Concertatiunculam Principis Domini nostri cum suis condiscipulis habitam impressi et mitto').
