Note 1 | Treatise in two 'books' on the treatment of wounds and physic deformations (pages 17-210), followed by a treatise in one 'book' on the treatment of fevers (pages 211-285). In the treatise on wounds each chapter is followed by an 'annotatio' (i.e. a comment by Alvarus Nonnius, in which more specifically the author tries to explain that what Arcaeus tells is in correspondence with the teachings of the Greek and Roman physicians). The treatise on wounds contains, on page 173, a letter from Arcaeus to Arias Montanus, telling that Arias Montanus could testify the exactness of the examples detailed in the following pages as he was present at Llerena at the time of the treatments (c. 1559-1560). |
Note 2 | The introductory and other letters show clearly that Arias Montanus, impressed by the professional skills of his compatriot, induced Arcaeus to write these treatises and had them published by Plantin. It was also Arias Montanus who forced the hand of Alvarus Nonnius, a physician of Spanish descent living at Antwerp, to write the 'annotationes' accompanying the first treatise. |
Note 3 | According to the colophon the printing was finished on 4 November 1573. |
