Note 1 | Public discourse held by d'Assonleville at the Pig College of the University of Louvain on 16 December 1588 on becoming doctor in law. Three themes were discussed, the first on a question of public law, the two others on matters of jurisprudence. In the dedicatory letter to the father of the author, Gulielmus Huysmannus, professor in Latin at the Louvain University, gives some details on the meeting and its attendants. |
Note 2 | It is obvious from the dedicatory letters that the mighty president of the Privy Council had arranged the ceremony at the Louvain University for his son. He also practically forced Plantin to print the text. Cf. Plantin's letters to Christopher d'Assonleville of 18 January 1589 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VIII-IX, no. 1431: Plantin has received d'Assonleville's letter of 15 January in good order asking to print the 'oraison quotlibettique' of his son; he is anxious to oblige the president even if he doesn't expect a brisk sale), 30 January 1589 (Ibidem, no. 1432: the printer is upset by d'Assonville's letter of 29 January. From Plantin's answer it must be deduced that the president had not received the printer's letter of 18 January and had repeated his demand. Plantin wrote that he was not only willing to publish the work but that he had already received the text and had started the printing. The job, in fact, would even be finished at the end of the following week), 11 February 1589 (Ibidem, no. 1441: 50 copies sent to d'Assonleville). |
