Note 1Theological treatise on 'the defense of the belief of our ancestors' against the heretics. Translation into Latin by the author or under his supervision of the French edition: Le premier livre de la défense de la religion de noz ancestres, auquel on déclare les stratagemes et ruses des hérétiques de notre temps, Paris, Claude Fremy, 1572, in 8⁰ (cf. Brunet, I, Column 1563).
Note 2The dedicatory to Philip II by the author is dated Antwerp, 1 September 1574: a Capite Fontium, during one of his many trips to the Netherlands passing through Antwerp, must have induced Plantin to publish this Latin translation. The work was already finished in the spring of 1575: in his letter of 30 April 1575 to the author, then back in Rome, Plantin expresses the hope that the two 'bales' with the copies of the 'defense de la foy', addressed to his friend Alanus Copus living with Cardinal Hosius at Rome, would by now have reached the prelate (Corr., IV, no. 623).
Note 3Listed in M 296, folio 4v (Defensio fidei maiorum nostrorum Christoph. a Capite fontium, 8⁰, a⁰ 1575, f[euilles] 27, [price:] stuivers 6), and M 164, folio 9r.
