Note 1 Edition in Greek with facing Latin translation of Gregorius Nyssenus’s theological treatise on virginity, by Joannes Livinaeus, a nephew of Livinus Torrentius (Dendermonde, 1546/47 — Antwerp, 13 January 1599).
Note 2 In the dedicatory and in the foreword to the reader Livinaeus explains that the Greek edition was made from two manuscripts. One, incomplete, he got from the Cologne typographer, Birckmannus. When his uncle, Livinus Torrentius, had to go to Rome, Livinaeus asked him to look in the Vatican library for manuscripts of the De virginitate, and to collate them with his copy. Torrentius was lucky enough to find a manuscript which contained the parts missing in the Birckmannus-manuscript, i.e. the first five chapters, including the foreword, and the last five chapters. He copied these parts and collated the rest. Cf. also Biographie Nationale [de Belgique], 12, 1892-93, Column 125.
Note 3 In a letter to Livinaeus of 26 April 1573 Plantin acknowledges having received the manuscript; he affirms to be ready to print it if Livinaeus could assure him that his text had not been communicated to another typographer. Plantin, indeed, had heard that the works of Nyssenus would be published by Birckmannus and by Parisian booksellers, including numerous treatises as yet not printed: if the De virginitate was among them, Plantin was not willing to risk money publishing another edition of a work only intended for a very limited number of specialists (Corr., III, no. 474).
Note 4 Some details also in Livinaeus’s dedicatory in his edition of Joannes Chrysostomus, De virginitate liber, 1575 (no. cp011594).
Note 5 Listed in M 296, folio 7v (Greg. Nyssenus de virginitate g[re]colat., 4º, aº 1573, f[euilles] 23, [price:] stuivers 7) and folio 12v, and M 164, folio 14r.
