Online bibliographical references
Note 1One of the more important treatises issued by Niclaes. First known edition.
Note 2Reprinted in Cologne, c. 1575, and in or after 1652. Latin translation, published perhaps in Kampen by Augustijn van Hasselt, c. 1561. English translations published c. 1574 and in London in 1652. Cf. de la Fontaine Verwey, pages 192-193.
Note 3According to de la Fontaine Verwey printed by Plantin between 1555-1562.
Note 4The illustration has also been reproduced in cp012085 and cp010771.
Note 5Voet already states that this edition was perhaps published by Augustijn van Hasselt. Hamilton, however, directly attributes this edition to Augustijn Van Hasselts press in Kampen and not to Plantin. Furthermore, he states the book was printed in c. 1561. (Hamilton, The Family of Love, 116)
Note 6According to Blouw, it is quite likely that a considerable number of works authored by Hedrik Niclaes attributed to Plantin were in fact not printed by him but by Augustijn van Hasselt in Kampen. The reason for this being the dangers regarding the printing of nonconformist books in Antwerp in this period. Plantin, however, almost certainly was involved in the printing process by supplying Augustijn van Hasselt with the types he needed. (Blouw, Dutch Typography, 64)
