Note 1 | Ruelens-de Backer, page 225 (1581, no. 11) mentions, without giving references: 'Fabulae aliquot Aesopi, breves, faciles et jucundae, in scholarum usum nunc primum selectae. Graece. Antverpiae, ex off. Chr. Plantini. 1581. 1 vol. in-8º'. Cf. also J. Landwehr, Fable-Books printed in the Low Countries, 1963, no. 53. The existence of this 1581 Greek school-edition of Aesop is confirmed by the entry in M 321 (under 1581): 'Fabulae aliquot Aesopicae graece selectae a Schenkelio, f[euilles] 3½, [price:] stuivers 1'. The mention in M 296, folios 6 verso and 22 recto, of an undated 'Fabellae Aesopicȩ graecȩ selectȩ, f[euilles] 3½, [price:] stuivers 1½' refers probably to the same edition. The format is not specified in either M 321 or M 296. If Reulens-de Backe's reference to an in 8⁰ is correct then this 1581-edition must have numbered 56 pages. It is interesting to note that, according to M 321 (under 1581), the selection of Aesop's fables for this 1581-edition was made by the schoolmaster Schenkelius. No copy known. |
