Note 1 Repertory of names as found on antique coins and monuments, classified according to 24 topics (Deorum Dearumque simulachra, templa, arae, aedes: eorumque nomina et epitheta; Ludi, festa, feriae, pontifices, augures, sacerdotes, flamines, aediles, officiaque, et collegia sacra; Urbis Romae epitheta, etc.).
Note 2 In the foreword dedicated to Ortelius, Goltzius explains the object of his work: to note all inscriptions on antique marble and brass plates and coins which could be useful for archaeology (and history). In the dedicatory to Marcus Fugger the author stresses the fact that he could use the manuscript on antique inscriptions compiled by Smetius (Martin De Smet), put at his disposal by Marcus Laurinus (this large and very important compilation was never printed and was some years later destroyed).
Note 3 Goltzius printed three of his works in his own Bruges workshop between 1563 and 1574. The 4th was printed for Goltzius in Antwerp by Aegidius Radaeus (Van den Rade) in 1576. Very likely at that time the activity of Goltzius's Bruges printing press had stopped. For the last of his works he must have contacted Plantin, with whom he had close business-relations (cf. Rooses, Musée, page 227).
Note 4 Listed in M 296, folio 18v (Thesaurus Rei Antiquariae Hub. Golsii, 4º, f[euilles] 29, [price:] stuivers 12, 1579).
