Note 1 | Contains: a) Text of the Argonautica edited by Ludovicus Carrio (pages 15-186), b) Scholia on the text by L. Carrio (pages 189-303). |
Note 2 | In the note to the reader (pages 187-188), Carrio boasts to have amended the Argonautica in more than 600 places. He lets it be understood that he used previous editions and comments on Valerius Flaccus (quoting some of them in the scholia), but also specifies to have consulted a very trustworthy manuscript more than 600 years old. |
Note 3 | According to the colophon the printing was finished on 15 July 1565. |
Note 4 | The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 73, gives the following details about 'Valerius Flaccus 8⁰': the wages for composing and printing amount to 32 florins Carolus guilders 2 stuivers As 800 copies were printed, 32 reams of paper 'petit bastard' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per ream, came to 44 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 76 florins Carolus guilders 18 stuivers The dates of the entries for composing and printing show that something went wrong: the wages for quire A are entered on 4 October 1564, for B-D on 21 October, for E-L on 4 November 1564; then the printing stopped for nearly eight months until on 3 June 1565 it resumed with quires M-N; finally on 7 July 1565 the last expenses, for quires O-T, are noted. |
Note 5 | The delay is probably due to something told by Carrio in the foreword dedicated to Pamelius in his In Valerii Flacci…castigationes published by Plantin in 1566 (see no. cp011430, part of the 1566 Valerius Flaccus-edition in 16mo: see following no.). The text is not very clear, but the meaning may be interpreted as follows: Carrio having had the occasion to visit Italy 'superiori anni' (= theoretically 1565, but more likely 1564), while Valerius Flaccus was still on the press, he put too much confidence in his scribes, who muddled the text, making innumerable faults ('Superiori anni…cum subitam quandam nactus oportunitatem, in Italiam…proficisci cogitarem; et tamen Valerium Flaccum, quem infinitis locis castigatum, scholiisque a me illustratum, sub praelo habebam, ante meum hinc discessum in lucem sub tuo nomine exire vellem: factum est de nimia librariorum festinatione, et eius cui describenda dederam, negligentia, ut pro veteribus erroribus sublatis, novi succrescerent et veteres non omnino omnes tollerentur'). This may explain why Plantin interrupted the printing from November 1564 until June 1565. Very likely he became aware that Carrio's text was not correct, and preferred to wait for the return from Italy of the scholar before continuing. In this hypothesis the many faults Carrio complains about are more specifically to be found in the quires finished before November 1564, that is A-L. |
Note 6 | Listed in M 296, folio 19v (Valerius flaccus a Lod. Carrione restitut. in 8⁰, A⁰ 1565, f[euilles] 19, [price:] stuivers 3). |
