Note 1 | Series of documents concerning the negotiations between Margaret of Parma and the Calvinist party, published at the initiative of the government. Contains: Letter of the lord of Brederode to Margaret of Parma (Antwerp, 8 February 1567); Request of the confederate nobility addressed to Margaret; Request of the Calvinists to the confederate nobility; Answer of Margaret of Parma to Brederode (Brussels, 16 February 1566 old style). |
Note 2 | Plantin printed part of the edition for M. van Hamont: on 10 March 1567 is noted to the debit of M. van Hamont 'pour impression de 16 rames [= meaning 400 copies] de Requestes de Brederode etc. lesquelles on a imprimé pour luy à 18 stuivers la rame daccord avec le M[aist] re: 14 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers' (Arch. 40, folio 34). |
Note 3 | Part of the edition must have been printed by M. van Hamont himself: of the Requeste de Brederode two different versions are known, one executed by a well equipped printer (= Plantin) and bearing on the title-page 'A Bruxelles, chez Michiel de Hamont', the other by a typographer working with worn out type and stating 'Imprimé à Bruxelles, par Michiel de Hamont' (a copy in KBR Royal Library of Belgium). Very likely de Hamont printed in his own office a first edition, which was quickly sold out, so that he asked Plantin for a reprint. |
Note 4 | The small and crude woodcuts on the title-page are the same in both editions: they must have been lent by de Hamont to Plantin, when the former commissioned his Antwerp colleague to print the pamphlet. |
