Note 1 | Treatise on the mass: a defence against the affirmations of Leo Empacius, an apostate priest of Oudenburg (of whom Opmeer had published in 1568 at Delft, translated from Latin into Dutch, some treatises, made when Empacius was still Catholic). Contains: the defence of the mass by Opmeer (Officium missae…historica assertio: pages 1-78); the objections in eight points to this exposition by L. Empacius (Velitatio adversus hanc assertionem Leonis Empacii: 79-88); the refutation of these affirmations (Responsio ad eosdem octo articulos in velitatione, a Leone propositos: 89-430). |
Note 2 | Paquot, IV, page 35 (followed by RDB, page 98 [1570, no. 4]), after having cited Plantin's Officium missae lists another publication of Opmeer by Plantin for 1570: 'Responsio ad VIII. articulos, à Leone Empacio, adversus Assertionem suam propositos. Antv. Christ. Plantinus, 1570, 12⁰'. This is in fact the treatise included in the Officium missae; a separate publication does not seem to have been issued. |
Note 3 | On the title-page is specified that the work was published by Plantin at the expenses of Simon Pauli (Pauwels or Pauwelsen), [bookseller at] Delft. It was in fact Opmeer who paid the bill, but Pauwelsen acted as middleman. In Arch. 46 (Journal 1568), folio 40v, at the date of 27 February 1568, Plantin notes to have received 72 florins Carolus guilders from Simon Pauwels: 'A bon compte d'impression du livre de Officio Missae Petro ab Opmeer que ie luy ay promis d'imprimer incontinent qu'il m'envoyera le reste de la copie soussigné et que i'en auray obtenu le privilege, à 48 stuivers la rame en faisant 1250, ou s'il n'en veut que 1000 il en payera stuivers 50, et ce de papier petit bastard de Troye comme est Solitudo Musii (a work already printed by Plantin: see no. cp012687) et de mesme format. Ou bien in 8⁰ lectre d'Augustin Romain comme est Dialogi Copi (see no. cp010916)'. Finally, not 1,250 or 1,000, but only 750 copies were printed, for which Plantin charged 171 florins Carolus guilders 9 stuivers (Arch. 16, folio 101) explained also as 'Item addici pap[yrum] francford[ensem] 13 mains pap. ad (?) 7 florins Carolus guilders unaquaque rismas: 4 florins Carolus guilders 11 stuivers']). The sum is entered in the ledger (Arch. 16, folio 101) to the debit of Petrus Opmeer in Delft on 19 November 1569; to the 171 florins Carolus guilders 9 stuivers are added 'Item 10 exemplaria in papyro magno francfordiensi continent f⁰ 32, et le papier bl[anc] couste 4 florins Carolus guilders, par quoy val[ent] 5 florins Carolus guilders' (meaning thus that, besides the 750 'ordinary' copies, were printed 10 copies on paper-de-luxe of Frankfurt). On the credit-side is noted the receipt 'passé longtemps' of the 72 florins Carolus guilders forwarded by Simon Pauwelsen and the payment by Opmeer on 9 December [1569] of 64 florins Carolus guilders This meant that 35 florins Carolus guilders 9 stuivers remained to be paid, but Jan Moretus closes the account by noting 'Le reste a esté saldé par le libraire de Delft, d'accord avec mon père [Plantin]'. On 4 January 1570 were shipped to Simon Pauwelsen, with other books, 500 'de officio missae in 8⁰' (Arch. 48, folio 2v). |
Note 4 | Listed in M 296, folio 13v (Officium Missę etc. ab Opmeer, 8⁰, 1570, [price:] stuivers 7). |
