| Note 2 | In the Bible-editions of 1574, 1580 and 1582, in the introductory part ‘Quid in hac Bibliorum editione sit praestitum’ an apology is made for the fact that a complementary part of Variae lectiones (see no. cp013332) is not inserted. The Notationes in Sacra Biblia by F. Lucas are, in fact, an enlarged version of these Variae lectiones. By giving this supplement Plantin fulfilled his promise — but, for some reason or other, most likely owing to an oversight, in the ‘Quid in hac Bibliorum editione sit praestitum’ of the 1583 in folio-edition, the same apology and excuses as in the previous publications are reprinted textually. |
| Note 3 | This in folio-Bible is one of the most impressive and beautiful editions of the Plantin Press. It is the result of a rather curious publishing-adventure: realized with the financial help of the Spanish King at a moment when Plantin was considered by many to be a follower of the rebels, and in any way lived in rebel-held country and printed many ordinances and decrees decrying Philip II and his partisans. Already in 1580 Plantin started working on this Bible. On 1 July 1580 he wrote to Arias Montanus ‘Biblia etiam nunc statui imprimere magnis typis cum variis lectionibus in margine et earum rationibus in fine atque figuris in aere excisis juxta rationem Monumentorum tuorum addere sed fere duplo illis majores, quod opus ni fallor placebit curiosis et illis qui raris cupiunt ornare suas bibliothecas’ (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VI, no. 882). Some months later, in October-November 1580, he could send his friend sheets of the Notationes in Sacra Biblia of F. Lucas intended to accompany the great Bible (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VI, no. 892). The edition is mentioned in several other letters written by Plantin in 1581 and 1582 (to Buyssetius, 17-19 February 1581 [Correspondance de C. Plantin, VI, no. 918]: ‘Biblia nunc maxima forma et typis cum figuris in aere excisis imprimo ad exemplar nostrum in 8⁰ et nuper absolvi notas in Biblia quarum folia hic aliquot mitto’; to Camerarius, 16 October [1582] [Supplément Correspondance de C. Plantin, no. 176]: ‘Sub praelis habemus…Biblia latina maximis typis cum figuris in aere scluptis [= sic] pro iis qui talibus delectantur ad ornandas bibliothecas’). The news of the enterprise must have reached Madrid quite early: already on 3 July 1581 de Cayas asked for information (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VI, no. 935). Plantin obliged in a letter of 5 September 1581 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VI, no. 940: ‘Quant a la Grande Bible de long temps commencee, je la poursuis autant que je puis fournir a payer les ouvriers…J’envoye pareillement le Dictatum en Latin et en François et quelques feilles de la grande Bible a figures en cuivre pour une monstre. J’espere de l’achever devant Pasques et si j’estois certain que sa Maté y print plaisir je la mectrois en lumière soubs son nom avec telle inscription que je scaurois luy estre aggreable’). The work dragged on much longer than Plantin anticipated in his letter to de Cayas. It was only achieved in the first months of 1583: on 29 April 1583 Michel Sonnius, the Parisian bookseller, ordered 50 copies of the ‘Bible f⁰ cuivre’, in addition to 50 copies already ordered previously (at an unspecified date) (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VII, no. 1000). The suggestion made by Plantin in his letter of 5 September 1581 to de Cayas must have been received favourably by the Spanish Court, but the dedication was finally addressed not to Philip II but to the Habsburg Cardinal-Infant Albert (who was later to become the husband of Philip’s daughter Isabella and Sovereign of the Netherlands). Plantin, however, seems to have taken the precaution to insert this dedication to a foe of the States-General only in part of the edition — and it may even be assumed in only a few copies. Even to Arias Montanus he could (or would) only send a copy without the dedication (letter of 22 September 1583: Correspondance de C. Plantin, VII, no. 1011). But some Bibles with the dedication eventually reached his Spanish patroni and on 1 January 1584 Alexander Farnese was instructed by Philip II to pay Plantin the sum of 9,000 florins Carolus guilders for printing the Bible, a copy of which had been sent to Cardinal Albert (Supplément Correspondance de C. Plantin, no. 184). Plantin was at that moment in Calvinist Leiden and his sons-in-law in Antwerp that was already practically besieged by Farnese’s armies, but (probably after the capitulation of Antwerp in August 1585) the archprinter received at least part of the subsidy. Cf. Plantin’s letter to Garnerius, secretary to A. Farnese, 4 December 1585 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VII, no. 1050: with the letter goes a Bible ‘pour la dedication delaquelle V.S. me procura passé quelque temps la reception de la gratuité de Sa Majesté’). See also his letter to de Mendoça, 31 January 1587 (Correspondance de C. Plantin, VIII-IX, no. 1205): ‘Ultra quod si quid Regiae benignitas placuerit addere ego cum illo amplo honorario pro dedicatione Bibliorum Illustriss. Cardinali Alberto ex ejus Regiae Majestatis mera liberalitate a me recepto inter beneficia mihi exhibita numerabo praedicaboque semper’. |
