Note 1 | On 18 March 1582, in Antwerp, Jean Jaureguy tried to kill the Prince of Orange with a pistol, but inflicted him only a not too serious wound. Jaureguy was slain on the spot. The employer of Jaureguy, the Spaniard Gaspar de Anastro, who knew of the complot, had left the city in time. But two other accomplices or taken for such, the Spaniard Antonio Venero and the monk Antoine Timmerman, were taken prisoner, condemned and executed. Cf. A. de Meyer, Le procès de l'attentat commis contre Guillaume le Taciturne, prince d'Orange, 18 mars 1582. Etude critique de documents inédits, Brussels, 1933; P.L. Lotar, Mémoire sur l'affaire Jauregui, Anvers, mars 1582. Le cas du P. Antoine Temmerman, Brussels, 1937. This pamphlet contains: pages [3-14]: The narrative of the attempt and the punishment of the culprits; [15]: Table of the three series of documents which follow; [16]: Blank; [17-24]: Documents found on Jaureguy (in Spanish, with French translation); [25-47]: Depositions of A. Venero (in Spanish, with French translation; 20-24 March 1582); [47-53]: Deposition of A. Timmerman (in Dutch, with French translation; 18-26 March 1582); [54-60]: Intercepted letters of G. de Anastro (in Spanish, with French translation; 16-17 March 1582); [60]: Letter of the Prince of Orange asking a merciful death for the condemned men; [61-62]: Deposition of A.
